American Kestrel
Recognition
Reddish-colored back with a double dark mustache. Quite a small bird of prey, about a foot in height.
Where seen
Sitting on telephone wires along Bayshore Rd and alongside SR31 going north.
Jimmy’s notes:
Often seen perched on telephone wires overlooking open fields. It often hovers before diving down to grab prey. Look for its upright stance. In flight, it is often seen hovering along verges. As is the case of most birds of prey, the female is slightly larger than the male. This bird is often used by novice falconers. |
