Blue Jay

Recognition
A 12” blue bird with a crest. The face and belly are pale. In flight you should see white bars on the wings.

Where seen
All around the park, particularly in the vacant space around Thomas Jefferson. A frequent visitor to bird feeders.  At our feeder, they always seem to arrive late in the afternoon.

Jimmy’s notes

The Blue Jay’s screams are often heard before it is seen. When excited or aggressive at a bird feeder, it will show its crest.  The male and female are similar in appearance. The blue color is not caused by pigmentation but is caused by refraction of light. Blue Jays have strong black bills which are used for cracking nut and acorns. After breeding, you may see family parties flying together.
