European Starling
Recognition
A blackish -greenish bird with whitish tinges to the edges of its feathers. During spring and summer, the sharp-pointed bill is yellow. Size: 7-8”.
Where to see
Often seen in flight in a mixed flock along with grackles. Seen sitting in small gangs, just like the mafia, on overhead wires at junctions such as Bayshore/New Post Road and Bayshore/US41.
Look out for these birds feeding on the grass median along New Post Road particularly after the sprinklers have been on.
Jimmy’s notes
Mature birds when breeding appear to have a green or blue iridescence. When you see a large flock of grackles, look out for some smaller dark birds, they may be starlings. During the breeding season, you may only see singles or pairs but after the breeding season in autumn, they form large flocks.
This is an invasive species, originating from Europe and was introduced In North America in the 1890s.
