Herring Gull

Recognition
A brown mottled bird that has a dirty look about it. The tip of the bill is black in color.

Where seen
Often seen waddling around the sand at Matlacha and Sanibel, and strutting around the piers at Fort Myers and Naples beaches. Also seen scavenging around the Municipal Dump along Del Prado Boulevard.

Jimmy’s notes
In winter, adults lose their white plumage and come to resemble juveniles.

Adults are the largest of the commonly-seen gulls at about two feet in length with a wing span of up to four-five feet.  They are white in color with a gray back. The black wing tips and the yellow bill are giveaway signs. There is a red spot at the tip of the bill.
