Killdeer

Recognition
A slender foot long bird (similar to a plover) with a brown back, a brown head and a whitish undercarriage. One of its most striking features are the two black bands around the neck.  Its call resembles its name.

Where seen
There is a pair which are regularly seen around Thomas Jefferson and another pair seen around the shoreline of the pond on Adam Drive.

Jimmy’s notes
In flight look out for the orange-red rump. These birds are often flushed at night when driving along the two roads mentioned above. They have long legs like waders but are not found along the salt-water shore lines. They are sometimes seen in the fields on SR31 heading north. It is thought that the neck band acts as a disruptive feature helping to break up the outline of the bird and thus fool predators.
