Belted Kingfisher
Recognition.
Look for a blue-colored bird with an out-of-proportion head which has a crest. There is a bluish band across its belly. About 12” in length.
Where seen
At both ponds on Concord Drive and surprisingly often seen on the wires opposite Weavers Corner. Farther afield, sitting on the wires on US 41 and SR 31 going north and along Alligator Alley, particularly towards dusk.
Jimmy’s notes
Look for this bird sitting on telegraph wires close to the ponds. If disturbed, it will often give a piercing distress call. Can be recognized by its silhouette-look for the big head and its crest |
