Laughing Gull

Recognition
Much smaller than the herring gull but similar in appearance. The legs tend to be darkish while herring gulls’ legs are paler.  Its call sounds like a series of laughing notes.

Where seen
Often seen in small groups walking along the edges of the sand on most beaches. Also seen on channel marker posts all along the Caloosahatchee and on bridge supports.

Jimmy’s notes
If you see a gull that has any remnants of a black head such as the odd black spot or two, it is a laughing gull in its winter plumage.

Laughing Gull adult

Adult Breeding Plumage

Adults are handsome birds with a black head, black legs and wings with black tips. In autumn these birds molt and they lose their all black heads although a few black spots still remain. If you focus your bins on an adult’s eye you may see an incomplete white eye ring.
