Loggerhead Shrike
Recognition
A gray bird, 9” in length, with a black face mask and black wing patches. The bill is also black and has a small hook on the bend of it. The Loggerhead name refers to the large head relative to the rest of its body.
Where seen
Seen in singles sitting on the telephone wires along New Post Road, Alley Way and regularly on the wires at Thomas Jefferson.
Jimmy’s notes
Look for bird which looks similar to the Northern Mockingbird except for the black face mask. All seen sitting like a sentry on the top of a bush. The Loggerhead shrike is on the Canadian list of endangered species and its demise is thought to be related to the heavy use of pesticides. The resident population of Florida shrikes is probably increased in winter by the arrivals of northern migrants.
