Mottled Duck
Recognition
These ducks are non-descript brown all over with a slightly paler brown neck. The bill is pale yellowy brown in color. The outer edges of the feathers are paler. Both sexes look the same. If you look carefully at the birds in flight you should be able to see a blue speculum (a wing patch).
These ducks are about 21 inches in length.
Where seen
There are a couple of pairs which are regularly seen close to the mangroves in the marina at OBV opposite the lighthouse.
Jimmy’s notes
These ducks look a bit like female mallards but are slightly smaller. They are quite wary of people and will easily take flight if flushed. Like mallards these ducks are dabbling ducks which means that they feed on the surface as opposed to diving ducks which dive in order to feed.
