Recognition

Has a pale breast with quite large black spots on it. The back is brown with some small black bars on it. There is a red spot on the back of the head. Males have a black moustache and females don’t. The bill is slightly down turned.

Where seen

Flying down to feed on the vacant lots along Paul Revere Loop facing Foxmoor and the vacant lots around Lara Circle

Jimmy’s notes

In flight look out for the white. These are the only woodpeckers found in Florida which have a brown back and are also the  only woodpeckers that frequently feed on the ground.
