Painted Bunting

Recognition
The males are one of the most colorful birds in the world and are shades of blue, green and orange. The females are green and yellow.

Where seen
Seen only during late winter and spring for a few months. Occasionally seen at bird feeders and the shrubs around Fox Moor. There are two regular pairs spotted at a bird feeder on Capt. John Smith Loop. Seen regularly at the Corkscrew reserve.

Jimmy’s notes
Once seen, never forgotten. The blue of the male is a “vivid”   blue.   Birds seen here in Florida are on migration.  The pair shown here were photographed at a feeder at OBV during the winter. These birds are quite shy and placing a shrub near a feeder should help attract them. “Bunting” may be of Scottish origin meaning “short and thick”.
