Red-bellied woodpecker
Recognition
The back of this bird is a series of what looks like a zebra type pattern. Adult males have a red head and both females and juveniles have a grey head.
Where seen
All around the park, flying from tree to tree in search of insects. Often seen on the concrete posts that support telephone and electricity cables. Readily comes to bird feeders if baited with seeds particularly at the end of the day.
Jimmy’s notes
The red belly is rarely seen as it occupies only a small part of the under-carriage. Often announces itself at a bird feeder by letting out a scolding chuck, chuck sound. The bird below was photographed on a feeder using a stealth camera. You can see the red head and the black and white pattern. These are the most commonly seen woodpecker around OBV.
