Red-winged Blackbird
Recognition
Adult males are black in color with red and yellow wing patches on the shoulder. Females are brown birds with whitish streaks on the breast. The feathers on the wings have white fringes.
Where seen
Seen in spring along Alligator Alley and in the fields around Lehigh Acres. Sometimes seen in the bushes around Fox Moor. Can also be seen in farmers’ fields when driving north of SR31
Jimmy’s notes
The wing patch of the male is easy to spot in flight. Often seen perching on the top of small bushes particularly in agricultural fields. Blackbirds belong to a group of birds known as the passerines. This means that they are birds that perch. This classification is sometimes incorrectly attributed to birds which sing. However, a lot of passerines are definitely song birds.
