Ruby-Crowned Kinglet
Recognition
A very small olive green colored bird. On the wings there are two white wing bars. The ruby crown of the male is only seen when the head feathers are brushed back.
The bird in the photograph is probably a female.
Where seen
In the grounds of the Edison-Ford estate and also around the yards at the Riverbend development.
Jimmy’s notes
These birds are often seen hopping about in small shrubs and flitting briefly from bush to bush. This species is one of the smallest birds found in Florida and generally arrives here after February.
The name kinglet means “little king” and is probably derived from old English.
