Ruby-Throated Hummingbird

Recognition
These are small birds (about 3 inches in length) and green in colour. Adult males have a red throat patch.  Once seen never forgotten.

Where seen
At  Keith McPhail’s nectar feeder on Thomas Jefferson Lane.  These birds are migrants and are seen here at the end of the summer.  They come from northern states such as Wisconsin to winter in the warmer climes of Florida and Mexico before returning in the spring.

Jimmy’s Notes
If you really want to see these aerial acrobats,  then invest in a nectar feeder and place in a wind-free spot quite close to a large window, so that they can readily be seen. The name originates from the humming noise created by the fast flapping of the wings.  These are the smallest species of bird found in Florida.  In essence, these birds are pleasure to see.
