Sanderling
Recognition
Breeding adults have a brown mottled appearance and a pale undercarriage. After breeding, adults lose their brown head coloration to become grayish.
Where seen
Along the shorelines of Sanibel and Captiva Islands.
Jimmy’s notes
These are those funny little birds that run in and out of the waves at the shoreline as they search the moist sands for food. They are generally seen in small groups. When flushed, they will settle down a few yards ahead and then start their walk in and out of the water line again.
