Sharp-Shinned Hawk

Recognition
A small hawk which appears grey and red. In flight look for the rings on the tail and the dark brown and alternate pale strips of the underside outer edges of the wings

Where seen
Seen perching on its lonesome in trees along Bayshore Road and sometimes in Thomas Jefferson.

Has been seen swooping down on a bird feeder along New Post Road.

Jimmy’s notes
These are quite small hawks and are about the same size if not slightly larger than the American Kestrel. They have a wingspan of about 2 feet.
If you see one in a tree , try to focus on the head and you should see a pair of piercing orange eyes.

The birds seen here in Florida are migrants and are therefore seen here in the winter before heading back north in the spring.
