Yellow-crowned Night Heron

Recognition
A gray, squat bird with white on its forehead and cheeks. The gray feathers are tipped with paler outer edges.  These birds are about 2 ft in overall length.  In flight they appear to be quite a stocky bird.

 Where seen
Lurking in the mangroves and usually seen alone.

Jimmy’s notes

Tends to be a secretive loner and you really have to look hard to spot this species. If you look hard enough at the picture, you will see a slight yellow color just above the bill indicating that this bird is in breeding plumage.  It will soar to great heights and can be mistaken for a bird of prey. In flight these birds tend to look black and white.
