Yellow-rumped Warbler

Recognition
A grey colored bird with yellow on its rump and flanks. Adult breeding males will also have yellow on the head.  The wings have white wing bars on them. This bird is sometimes known affectionately as “butter butts” because of the yellow rump. This is one of the most commonly seen warblers in Florida.

Where seen
Often seen hopping about from branch to branch in very small hedges around the park.

Jimmy’s notes
Appears for a couple of months after Christmas and then migrates south in March. The yellow rump is the best recognition factor. This bird also has quite a distinctive call which is a “chip, chip” sound.
In the western states of America, this bird is known as Audubon’s warbler and in the eastern states, it is known as the Myrtle warbler. Warbler is derived from an old French word “werbler” meaning to sing with trills and quavers.
