Hello Fellow OBV Golf League players. Finally, February provided better weather and therefore better golf conditions and scores. It is a nice change to play in sunshine and have the temperature above 50 F.
February is our Golf Tournament time and we had an excellent turnout for the three-week event, which concluded on the 24th February, just in time for the prizes to be ready for the Golf Banquet.
32 men and 15 ladies participated in the tournament, with some excellent scores. As we are more of a fun league than a deadly serious bunch of golfers we have a three game event with the best two scores from the three games providing the final tournament scores.
The Men’s League had some very close games and a number of ties for second place that had to be resolved by going to the hardest holes for tiebreakers.
Here are the results:
In the ‘A’ Flight, Don Walker is our new Men’s Champion; he had two really good early rounds to end up with a net 111 for both games, Malcolm Quinn came in second with a net 113 and Dick Cronin had a blistering final round of 66 to finish third with 114.
In the ‘B’ Flight Steve Seitz, who only played two games, finished first with a net total of 107. Richard Reed and Stan Spearman ended up joint second with total net score of 113 each. The final results after the tiebreakers were Richard Reed, second and Stan Spearmen, third.
The ‘C’ Flight saw two great rounds by a player that only joined us last year to have a total net score of 112. Gar Forsht was 11 strokes in front of Bert Arens and Chet Groce who were tied with 123 total for second place tied. This was resolved with the tiebreakers and Chet finished second and Bert was third.
In the Ladies ‘A’ Flight: Carol Brown, became our new Ladies Champion with a total net score of 110 just beating out the reigning Champion, Glenese Dougherty by one stroke; Anne Routley came third with a 119.
The Ladies ‘B’ Flight results had Jeri Crosmas with a score of 108 edging out Pat Maslovich who had 111 and Elaine Dotolo with a 115.
The ‘C’ Flight for Ladies was a run away win for Virginia Howells whose net score for two games was and incredible103. She was followed by Cathy Miller with 112 and Elaine Cronin with 121.
I just had a thought that there may be some people who are not golfers, who wonder what are the different Flights in golf. Golf is one of the few games played by enthusiastic people who try to give all players an even playing field. So determined by their previous games, each player has a handicap that reflects their ability. This allows a good player to play a less talented player and keep the contest even; for example a good golfer may have an 8 handicap for a regular 18-hole golf course, a less talented player may have a handicap of 22 for the same course. When the contest starts the good player must give the other player 22-8 strokes, which is 14 strokes. The poorer player will be able to take one stroke from his score on the 14 most difficult holes. At the end of the game both players should have about the same score when their handicaps are taken into account.
To make the Tournament more equal we have Three Flights for each of the Ladies and Men. The ‘A’ Flight are the better golfers with lower handicaps than the other two Flights. If you look at the scores attached you will see that over half of the players are in the 120 net score range for two games which is excellent for a par 60 Executive Course.
Regards,
Elaine & Malcolm |
