Gafftopsail catfish or Sail cat or Gafftop

When - all year round

Description

Gray in color with long flowing extensions off the dorsal and pectoral fins. They are covered in a thick grey slime which leaves your line covered in “goo”. Under the mouth there are two larger barbels. Beware of the sharp spines.

Size

These are typically between 3 and 6 lbs.

Food Value

Chuck Fitch is a bit of an expert in the fish culinary department and swears and continues to swear that they “be good eatin’. Otherwise, keep them and grind them up for chum.

Game Qualities

Often take off and run with your bait and when on line, they exhibit a series of quick, successive plunges.

Tackle and Baits

Heavier bait rod, with a bait runner facility and cut baits. Any type of cut bait appears to work but we still prefer ladyfish. Heavier lure rod trolling larger lures such as the Rattletrap.

Examples of rattletraps we use.
