Spanish Mackerel

Description

A dark blue top body with silvery sides. There is usually an array of yellow and brown spots on the silvery sides.

Size

We have only caught fish in the 1 to 3 pound range

Food value

An oily fish with darkish flesh, we have cooked them on the BBQ wrapped in tin foil.

Game qualities

Very good fun when using light tackle, giving very fast runs.

Tackle and baits

We’ve caught them on light spinning gear when chasing down a shoal of ladyfish on the edges of grass flats. Best lures are spoons and spinners in silver patterns such as the Mepps’ Anglia Long Size 3 and Krocodiles made by Kuhr Jensen.
