Mayan Cyclid

When: all year round

Description

These non-native species have spread throughout Florida and are found in fresh and brackish waters. They often appear to have a pinkish tinge, darkish stripes. The body is ovate and the first dorsal and anal fins are spinous. The caudal fin is slightly rounded and there is generally a spot close to the start of the tail.

Size

These tend to run in sizes under a pound in weight and are quite often smaller than this.

Excellent eating qualities

Game Qualities

For small fish, and like snappers, they fight quite well.

Tackle and Baits

Light spinning rod with 20lb braid using Mepps spinners.
