When: Spring and early summer

Description

Reddish on the top and whitish on the underside with a prominent ringed spot at the base of the tail fin

Size

We have only ever caught quite smallish reds, the biggest being around the two pound mark.

Food Value

The smaller fish up to about 10lbs make some of the best eating.

Game Qualities

Excellent fighters and one of the best sporting fish around if you are lucky enough to catch one.

Tackle and Baits

Medium to light spinning rod with 30lb braid when lure fishing

Recommended lure: Mepps’ Aglia Long Size 3.

Medium to light bait rod fishing:  live shrimp with a small weight just enough to get the shrimp floating down.
