Speckled Seatrout

Description

A streamlined fish whose sides, dorsal and tail fins are covered in dark or black spots. The body of the fish may be stained if they have been in colored water.

Size

Most of those we have caught have been under a couple of pounds but you occasionally catch a 5 pounder.

Food value

Very good and don’t forget the total length must measure between 15 and 20 inches to make a seatrout a keeper.

Game qualities

When first hooked, they run deep and may thrash about on the surface.

Tackle and bait

We have caught them by the bridges on light rods, using live shrimp. We have used lures successfully while fishing the docks and grass areas around Lofton’s Island. (9-acre island off City Yacht Basin). We have caught them using Mepps’ Aglia long lures but our recent favorite is the Storm Kickin Minnow a.k.a “The Secret Lure”.
