Black Tip Shark

Description

These are grey above and white below. Black tips are found on the pectoral and dorsal fins. A black tip is also found on the bottom lobe of the caudal fin.

Size

Most of the black tips we’ve caught have been in the 10 to 50lb range and caught in the hotter period (January to September).  Having said that, my friend Iain from England and I caught three on Christmas Day, 2007.

If you are nervous of handling sharks and in particular, scared of trying to remove the hooks, don’t bother fishing for them.

Food value

Very good but don’t forget to bleed them as soon as they are been caught but don’t forget the bag limit of only one shark per person.  Don’t take one just to throw away or give to a neighbor for their cat.

Game qualities

On medium-sized tackle, they run wildly and often roll on the surface.

Tackle and baits

Most of our sharks have been caught using cut baits lying static on the bottom (ladyfish is the preferred bait). We use medium powered rods, with baitrunners and don’t forget--always use a steel leader.

One of our homemade shark leaders.
