Mangrove or Black Snapper or
Mango Snapper

When: all year round

Description

Gray on the top and back, whitish belly and an overall pale copper tinge. This species of fish particularly like structures found in the river and on the canals.

Size

These are rarely over the 1lb mark and many of those which we have caught are undersize (less than 10 inches).

Food Value

Excellent, one of Dan’s favorites.

Game Qualities

Excellent fighters and when initially hooked they make strong runs making you think that you have hooked a whopper.

Tackle and Baits

The most important thing to do is to trim down the size of your tackle and in particular the leader, your line and hook.  We use size 10 or 12 golden-colored hooks.  The way to catch them is to fish using a small weight or small rubber-core sinker to which is attached a light weight leader and hook. Cast the bait and periodically lift the bait off the bottom by winding in a few turns. You will be surprised when you get a “sudden hit”
