Snook

When: all year round but better in warmer months.

See note on special tag requirements.

Description

Easily recognized by the distinctive black stripe which runs along most of the length of the lateral line. They also have a distinctive shape: a tapered head with a snout, yellow fins and an underslung lower jaw.

Size

So far we have only caught small snook up to 5lbs but have seen many larger ones in excess of 10 lbs lying in the shadow line at the bridge at Matlacha.  Locally, we have seen larger ones at both bridges at Old Bridge and along the dock walls in Sir Walter Way.

Food Value

One of the top fish. Interestingly, they have a lot of meat on them compared with many other species.

Game Qualities

Pound for pound, they are excellent fighters and one of the best sporting fish we have caught. Snooks are crafty and will run you into pylons, under docks and around any obstacles they can find. Beware…you have been warned.

Tackle and Baits

We have caught snook on lures, live shrimp and smaller pieces of cut bait on medium sized tackle. Recommended lures: Mepps’ Aglia Long No3 (silver), Yo Zuri Crystal minnow (red and white) and Bomber 15 15 A (Red and White)

A couple of our favourite snook lures
