Stingray

When: warmer months in the breeding season

Description

Very distinctive diamond-shaped, generally chocolate brown on top and white underneath. The barbed spike is found at the base of the body where it meets the tail. Beware this spike can be a killer (Steve Hunter the Crocodile Hunter R.I.P.)  Wear protective gloves when unhooking!

Size

Most of those we’ve caught have had a wing span of between 2 and 3 feet, although we have caught larger ones. Chuck has speared specimens weighing up to 30lbs for consumption.

Food Value

They taste like scallops and cook as you would cook them.

Game Qualities

We have generally caught these when fishing for sharks. They tend to run along the bottom in quite long bursts and you generally don’t know that you have got one until the fight is over.

If you are not going to eat them, always try to remove the hook. They can often be unhooked while still in the water by carefully bending over the boat armed with a pair of pliers.

Tackle and Baits

Heavier bait rod with 40lb braid, a shark trace and cut bait.
